About Us

Groton Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union is a forward-thinking and growing credit union built upon more than 56 years of commitment and service to our members and our community. We believe in supporting organizations and activities devoted to improving our members' communities and their quality of life.

As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, we are owned by our members – the people that save and borrow through us. When you become a Groton Municipal Employees FCU member, you become an owner in an organization that is democratically governed by a board of directors with oversight by an appointed Supervisory Committee. They are unpaid volunteers who represent the interests of their fellow members.

We are committed to providing the financial resources you need to better manage your money and make informed financial choices.

If you belong to one of the following groups you can take advantage of our great products and services today:

  • Employees and elected or appointed officials of the Town Montville, Connecticut (Police, fire, school board, teachers, etc.).

GMEFCU History

The Groton Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union was formed in 1956 by Raymond Bugbee and William Clinton Jr. The original Board of Directors were six members comprised of Bugbee, Clinton, Robert Falvey, John Ball, James Davis, Frank Kohl, and Burton Wilbur.

Since its inception, the Credit Union has been served by 75 different volunteers from the membership. When the Credit Union first opened, its total assets were $7,800.00. Assets now exceed $7,000,000.00. The original location of the Credit Union was 359 Thames Street in Groton. In 1966 the Credit Union moved to its Meridian Street location, but it was upstairs in City Hall rooms C-7 and C-8. In 1987, the Credit Union moved into the basement of the Municipal building. The Credit Union moved again in 2018 and is presently located at 44 Plaza Court, Groton, CT. On behalf of the entire membership, we would like to thank each and every volunteer, both past and present for their dedication and generosity in contributing to the growth and success of the Credit Union.
